A study to learn more about cancer of the pancreas

This study is looking at tissue samples to find out more about how pancreatic cancer develops.
Cancer of the pancreas is often diagnosed when it is quite advanced and difficult to treat. Researchers want to learn more about why pancreatic cancer starts and what helps it to grow. To do this, they need to collect samples of tissue from people who have pancreatic cancer and from people who don’t.
In this study, they will study samples of pancreatic tissue removed during surgery. This may be surgery for pancreatic cancer, or for another disease affecting your pancreas such as 
. Some people taking part will be having surgery to other body organs nearby, which means some tissue from the pancreas is removed. This healthy pancreatic tissue is also very useful for the researchers.
The aim of the study is to learn more about pancreatic cancer. You will not benefit directly from taking part and it will not affect the treatment you have. But a better understanding of how pancreatic cancer develops may lead to better treatments in the future.
Who can enter
You may be able to enter this trial if you
- Are having surgery to your pancreas either for pancreatic cancer, or for another condition
- Are having your operation at Southampton University Hospitals Trust
Trial design
The researchers will keep a sample of pancreatic tissue removed during surgery. They will use the sample to study pancreatic cells, the messages they send between them and the and proteins they contain. They will also ask you to give a blood sample.
Hospital visits
There are no extra hospital visits. You can give the extra blood sample when you are in hospital to have your surgery or at your pre-assessment appointment.
Side effects
There are no side effects from taking part in this study.
